Country Club: Darkest Africa or Bright Global Star? West Africa is Open for Business

Complimentary one hour webinar:
Tuesday, August 24, 2010
10:00 am, CDT (GMT -05:00, Chicago)
04:00 pm, BST (GMT +01:00, London)

Nigeria has one of the world’s fastest growing telecommunications markets.  Over 600 million gallons of light oil were recently discovered off the shores of Ghana.  The recent civil war in Cote D’Ivoire has rendered the country unsafe for foreign corporations.

Which of the above statements are true?  West Africa clearly presents significant opportunities to those companies that can understand the sub-region, manage its unique challenges and build sustainable local business models. The difference between success and failure lies in understanding a sub-region that is as far from Western culture and models as China was to investors in the 90s. Many business leaders recognize that, with rising incomes, and growing populations and infrastructure, Africa will represent their top source of growth for the coming decades. And West Africa is fast becoming the proving ground for businesses with continental ambitions.

This webinar will help you answer questions such as:

  • What is the role of expatriates in West Africa? How are they perceived and how should this affect your talent development strategies?
  • How competitive is the local job market? Which approaches are effective in retaining local talent and why?
  • What are best practices for managing government relations, maintaining sound corporate governance standards, and deterring corruption?

This one hour session, covering Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Senegal, is hosted by Brookfield Global Relocation Services and presented by Marian Opoku-Dakwa of Berlitz Cultural Consulting network.

Ms. Opoku-Dakwa is an independent Intercultural Consultant who specializes in the instruction of intercultural awareness, effective intercultural communication and skill building for families moving abroad and people who will be doing business internationally. Moreover, as a Project Manager at a communications firm in Johannesburg, Marian provided communication strategies for public and private sector organizations in Africa, such as South African government’s HIV/AIDS communication campaign.
